KERNEELS BREYTENBACH devoured a book on atomic habits, a thriller set in Israel and a refreshing debut.

SOMEONE asked why James Clear's Atomic Habits: Tiny Changes, Remarkable Results has not been reviewed in Vrye Weekblad. It tops Nielsen's list of bestsellers in South Africa. The book has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide, and has been translated into 60 languages, the publisher tells me. In South Africa alone, 100 707 copies have been bought to date. Internationally speaking, it is the counterpart of Bessel van der Kolk's The Body Keeps the Score.

But Atomic Habits is different. James Clear has many critics, because of his successes, that's the way it goes. They point out that he's not really an expert on anything in particular. Just another guy with his own blog and newsletter. Someone who has figured out a spectacularly successful way of learning new habits. Someone who has grasped the art of blogging.

My mother would have loved him dearly. All those little things I was told as a kid – every single thing has its time and place, do the drudgery first, wash behind your ears, brush your teeth when you get up .....
