What are we drinking this week?
Blackberry ginger mocktail
Place four blackberries, two lime slices, and three mint leaves in a pretty glass. Use a pestle to gently crush and mix the ingredients. Add ice and top up with ginger ale. Garnish with lime wedges, blackberries, or mint leaves. Delish.
Finds of the week
#1 Clean Meat
Sewe Slabberts is a family farm in the heart of the picturesque Riemland in Reitz. The farm belongs to Danie Slabbert, and his wife Via. They have five children (hence the name Seven Slabberts). Danie is passionate about regenerative agriculture, and farms cattle, sheep and chickens using an ultra high density grazing method, which not only promotes soil health and a sustainable ecosystem, but gives a unique and 100% genuine flavour to the meat. All animals on the farm are born and raised naturally, without the use of any chemicals, ensuring that there is a holistic and environmentally friendly approach to farming that preserves the land for future generations.
Regenerative meat offers numerous health benefits and an exceptional flavour profile. The animals are raised on diverse pastures with a wide variety of native plants, producing meat that is high in healthy fats such as omega-3s, and free of antibiotics, hormones and synthetic additives. The Fomolistas were blown away by Danie's meat (his boerewors is sensational). The flavour of the meat is unbeatable. Danie harvests only two cattle, one sheep, and 500 chickens per week, and does all the butchering and processing on the farm. If you live in or happen to be near Reitz, Harrismith, Bethlehem, Pretoria or Johannesburg you can order meat from Danie here.
#2 Brabantia laundry line
When it comes to clotheslines and ironing boards, look no further than Brabantia products. Even though it is more expensive, the quality is simply superior. This week we had to consider laundry lines again and because we have little space, we decided on the rotary for R2 799 from Takealot which helps to blow-dry the laundry.
#3 Roof fan
Summer (and mosquitoes) are upon us. And for that a ceiling fan is just the thing, though traditionally they are hideously ugly objects. But now attractive fans with built-in lights are finally available and one of the most beautiful (and therefore not the cheapest) is the “Hugger" for low ceilings. It comes with wooden blades, works with a six-speed remote control that you can set to different times – but the attachment that links the fan to the ceiling is what caught our attention. Stylish. R4 143 at Takealot.
Kalk Bay in the limelight
Last week Prince William was treated to a traditional seafood barbecue on the Kalk Bay harbour wall with models Heidi Klum and Winnie Harlow, actor Billy Porter and rapper Tobe Nwigwe. The barbecue was organised to discuss sustainable fishing. The food was prepared by Kobus van der Merwe from Wolfgat in Paternoster.
For us non-royals, the #8 best Kalk Bay restaurants to eat at haven't changed in ten years, and neither have many of the menus.
#1 Kalky's
In the port. For fresh fish and chips to eat right there or take away.
#2 Salt
Opposite the harbour, on the main road. Fusion food with a good wine collection.
#3 Olympia Cafe, deli and bakery
Next to Salt. The grande dame of Kalk Bay eateries and the Fomolistas' first choice for breakfast, lunch and dinner with a menu that has been the same for years. Fresh fish, mussels, pasta and the best salads in town. Our fave is the seafood linguine. Also buy the best pastries and sourdough bread from their bakery around the corner.
#4 Chardonnay Deli
Opposite the Dalebrook tidal pool. Very popular eating place for wholesome food. Great for especially breakfast and lunch or a coffee and homemade cake on the way to Muizenberg.
#5 Brass Bell
When you think of Kalk Bay, what comes to mind is the Brass Bell – the big old white and blue building leaning into the sea. There are different places to eat, each with its own menu – from pizza to à la carte. There is a lookout tower, the best bar on the peninsula and the very best view of False Bay.
#5 Cape to Cuba
Next to the harbour. A wonderful atmosphere and decor and mojitos for sundowners.
#6 Ohana Café
100 m from the station. Great for breakfast. They serve delicious home-baked and vegan meals and are very popular with the first-thing-in-the-morning ice-cold swimming crowd. The Fomolistas are addicted to their cinnamon sticks.
#7 Satori
In the centre of town and the best pizzas in Kalk Bay.
#8 Harbour House
Much more expensive than the other places to eat in Kalk Bay. HB is built on the top floor of the harbour wall, has its own fishing boat and is known for some of the best seafood and linefish in the city.
What are we cooking?
Tomato + feta
We can't get enough of this baked feta and tomato dish. One of the Fomolistas is on a road trip and she's made it three times already because it's easy, quick, and doesn't require any fancy accessories. If you don't want to eat it with bread as in the video, it's fantastic bakkie food on its own, but also great with butternut squash or chickpeas (straight out of a tin).
Anchovies+fire
Another winner from our travelling Fomolista is this quick smoked-anchovy pasta she spotted on Insta.
