On our radar

Goodbye Iris, Hello Margret

The latest style icon is 85-year-old great-grandmother Margret Chola from a small town in Zambia. Thanks to her granddaughter Diane Kalezhi, a New York stylist, she is the new face of innovation and intergenerational collaboration.

What began as a picture with her grandmother for her Instagram account quickly turned into a photo shoot when it caught the world's attention. She is considered the epitome of how we should look at  beauty and self-expression at any age.

Green salt

We whipped up this fabulous herb salt in our (small) food processor this week.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup coarse salt (we use Kalahari)
  • About 7 sprigs rosemary - the leaves only
  • 5 sage leaves
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 tsp lemon zest ( optional)

You can store it in your fridge and it will last for weeks. It's tasty on chicken, on a steak and over roasted potatoes, but we think it plays especially well with tomato.

Julia Child's unbeatable vinaigrette

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons wine vinegar or a combination of vinegar and lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon dry mustard 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons olive oil and/or a salad oil, such as grapeseed oil
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons minced shallot or spring onion and/or ¼ teaspoon dried herbs, such as tarragon or basil
  • Large pinch of freshly ground pepper

Directions

  • Combine vinegar, mustard and salt in a bowl; beat until dissolved.
  • Whisk in oil, shallot (or spring onions and/or herbs) and pepper.
  • Alternatively, combine all ingredients in a screw-top jar; cover and shake vigorously for 30 seconds to mix thoroughly.
  • Taste carefully and adjust seasonings as desired.

Quote of the day

#10 quotes from Carl Jung

#1 The healthy man does not torture others – generally, it is the tortured who turn into torturers.
#2 Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.
#3 Through pride we are ever deceiving ourselves. But deep down below the surface of the average conscience a still, small voice tells us, something is out of tune.
#5 We cannot change anything until we accept it. Condemnation does not liberate.
#6 The pendulum of the mind alternates between sense and nonsense, not between right and wrong.
#7 Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.
#8 A particularly beautiful woman is a source of terror. As a rule, a beautiful woman is a terrible disappointment.
#9 Where love rules, there is no will to power; and where power predominates, there love is lacking. The one is the shadow of the other.
#10 There is no such thing as a pure introvert or extrovert. Such a person would be in the lunatic asylum.

Video of the week

The Boks and their touchy-feely ways.
