I FIRST became acquainted with the ANC on January 8 1984 in Lusaka – I attended their press conference at the movement's annual birthday celebration.

Then a 33-year-old Boerseun from the Free State, and a political correspondent for the mouthpiece of white big business, the Financial Mail, I met the communists I had been warned about my entire life. Bloodthirsty terrorists who wanted to force out whites like me and turn my country into a satellite state of the Soviet Union.

Initially, I felt a bit like Piet Retief, but I was curious about the people the United Nations called the “sole and authentic representatives of the South African people”...
