I HAVE known Laudo Liebenberg for years; a seasoned actor and musician. He is known as the lead singer of aKING and for his roles in the Afrikaans sseries Die Byl, Die Boland Murders and ProjekDina - he has also appeared in three seasons of the international series Black Sails.
No, I'm fibbing. I don't know him at all. If you grew up on someone's soundtracks and they appear so often on your screen, that person becomes a mythological figure with whom you identify on a personal level. He did perform one night in my and Henk van der Schyf's home theatre Hausbabadada in Pretoria, together with Frank Freeman, with their Eet Kreef tribute band to Johannes Kerkorrel.
The house was packed. It was nice and cozy. I cooked for 70 people. Somewhere in a small stuffy bar behind our theatre we popped a spark plug and laughed in tall glasses. I listen to Laudo again today, and wonder who is the man with the dark, captivating voice, who rarely looks up from his microphone...
