In reaksie op Elna van der Merwe se verhaal van 'n simboliese adder in die paradys, skryf ANDREW PATERSON van die woedende rassisme wat hy in die Overberg beleef het, dikwels van mense wat in 'n omgekeerde Groot Trek gesemigreer het.

My apologies for commenting in English, but I’d rather not mangle Die Taal with my appalling written Afrikaans.

In 2017 I made a similar move, in my case from the Northern suburbs of Jo’burg to Hermanus, where I bought a house in one of the outlying Southern suburbs (sight unseen on auction). The Overberg has to be one of the most beautiful parts of the country I’ve ever seen, but in the area I bought in I was soon sadly shocked to discover the self-same angry racism describe here deeply embedded in my new town, which never came to feel like home as a result.

I really hadn’t expected to find “Orania-by-die-See" in this breathtakingly beautiful corner of the Western Cape, where so many of my neighbours were deeply religious racists, yearning for the “good old days” of Apartheid when everything was better. For them. Sadder still was the fact that this attitude permeated all the way down through to young, conservatively evangelical families moving there with their children to get away from the “k*****s!”..
