15 questions for Lady Skollie

She's preparing to tie up her Standard Bank Young Artist (2022) show, ‘Groot Gat', with the final opening happening in Cape Town. It counts among her biggest achievements, along with designing a R5 coin for South Africa in 2019. LAUREEN ROSSOUW asked the questions.

1. You were born Laura Windvogel. Where does the name Lady Skollie come from?

I'm both sophisticated and strategically wild.

2. Where did you grow up?

Retreat, Cape Town.

3. When did you decide to become an artist?

As soon as I was able to draw, and I would always announce it. Being left-handed made me believe it had been decided for me.

4. What other art mediums would you like to explore? 

Paper maché, carving, bookbinding.

5. What was your favourite toy as a child?

A knitted version of Woofles from Pumpkin Patch that my grandmother made for me.

6. What do you listen to when you work?

Die Antwoord, Jesus Christ Superstar, Kanye West, Amanda Strydom.

7. What inspires and excites you about living in South Africa?

The complexities of finding yourself in society as a coloured woman.

8. What else do you wish you had time for every day?

Reading.

9. How would you describe your style?

Eclectic E.

10. What is the biggest luxury you have spent  money on?

Viviers Studio outfits (plural, I've bought many outfits from Lezanne).

11. What does no one know about you?

I'm a flautist.

12. Is there something you regret?

Hurting people's feelings because I was young and stupid.

Castle Lite and chocolate-covered marzipan logs

14. What are you afraid of?

Not much. Probably dying.

15. What are you looking forward to?

My child starting to speak.
