I was an outsider, the middle one of five sisters, who slipped out the back door every day and disappeared into the outdoors. Carnarvon, my home town, was like a big farm and the veld was our backyard. Something in my understanding made me realise that Mother Nature is my mother, so on my own in the veld I could understand myself.
