For LOUIS DE VILLIERS, it is not strange that women beat men in endurance sports. He salutes intrepid sailor Kirsten Neuschäfer and the pain threshold of women (which is always higher than his).

THE media largely ignored her but my former colleague Eben Human  kept sailing enthusiasts thoroughly informed on Facebook about Kirsten Neuschäfer's progress in the Golden Globe solo race around the world.

And also about her victory 235 tense days  after she left Les Sables-d'Olonne in western France and returned there, a large part of the journey taking her across the dreaded Southern Ocean.

Eleven yachts had to give up and only three completed the race without needing repairs in a port...
