‘You see, now your children are dead’

Rejection and the need for control underlie ‘incomprehensible’ crimes that have claimed at least 42 lives in two decades. Educational psychologist Melanie Moen and criminologist Christiaan Bezuidenhout traced 20 South African cases of ‘revenge filicide' since 2003, and their new paper analyses killers who were determined to inflict suffering and misery on their partners by murdering their children. DAVE CHAMBERS reports.

THEY were separated by 14 years and  1,750km, but the crimes of Marius van der Westhuizen and Lucas Phasha are connected by a ghastly thread. 

The two fathers each killed all their children, and for no other reason than to inflict suffering on their wives.

It’s called “revenge filicide”, and the Van der Westhuizen and Phasha cases are two of the 20 examples analysed in a new paper (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/jip.1603) by South African academics...
