Geordin Hill-Lewis | A day in the life of South Africa’s best mayor

ANNELIESE BURGESS spent a 13-hour working day with the mayor of Cape Town and came away impressed by his work ethic, his communication skills and his enthusiasm.

BY the time Geordin Hill-Lewis takes his place in the pit of the cavernous council chamber, he has dropped his daughter at school, paged through the newspapers on his desk (he loves “paper”), had a media briefing from his team, welcomed a visiting delegation of international mayors and chaired a caucus meeting of his mayoral committee (mayco).

The mayco meeting itself starts at 10.30am. “It's the boring stuff," jokes James Styan, his chief of staff. The mayor, however, seems to be having a lot of fun as he moves through the agenda. In front of him – and everyone else in the chamber – are stacks of bound documents (every page of which, Styan says, the mayor will have read).

“Cool!" says the mayor.
“Thank you to the CFO and his excellent staff for modelling this."
“The climate change action document is good. Well done."..
